A couple of years ago I began my weight-loss journey. Little did I know I would be starting my weight-loss journey about 100 more times after that. No matter what I did for some reason I never reached my goal. I vfwould workout, I would eat well, but I wasn’t getting my desired results. Granted , I wasn’t THAT consistent. I felt as though I was consistent enough to at least see some results that’ll give me the indication that I was on the right path.
I always thought something strange was going on with my body. I was fat, yes, but that wasn’t what I was entirely concerned or insecure about. It was my body frame. The thing that was confusing to me was how my body frame was originally, before I endured consistent domestic violence as a child & how it altered after. I would consider my frame before the trauma “normal” and upright.
After the trauma my frame became stiff and lowly. I noticed around 2020 that i had restricted mobility & it was something that kind of crept up on me overtime- due to my sedentary upbringing. Certain movements that I would do would cause either discomfort or pain, sometimes both even.
A friend suggested that I look into something called “Dry Needling”. Researching dry needling ultimately led to me discovering fascia. Not to be dramatic, but after that my life changed forever.
What Is Fascia?
According to hopkinsmedicine.org & science , Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place.
Its Function & Purpose
Every body structure is wrapped in connective tissue, fascia, creating a structural continuity that gives form and function to every tissue and organ. The fascial tissue is equally distributed throughout the entire body, enveloping , interacting with, and permeating blood vessels, nerves, viscera, meninges, bones, and muscle, creating various layers at different depths and forming a tridimensional metabolic and mechanical matrix. The fascia becomes an organ that can affect an individual’s health . ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5871034/#bibr8-2515690X17750750 )
As much as I’d like to go into deep detail of the anatomy of fascia, I’m not. I want to just share an overview of my fascination with fascia.
FASCINATING FASCIA FACTS
An overlooked fact about fascia is that, because our fascia makes up such a massive part of our physical being, it is also the main source for storing our emotions. Our bodies hold this information below the conscious level as a protective mechanism.
What that means is, that every emotion (energy in motion) that we’ve experienced in our body that we didn’t allow to fully pass through, trapped itself in our fascia web. This emotional prison can manifest physically in headaches, back pain, neck pain, numbness, and tingling and overall dysfunction. It can also even negatively affect your posture. Which indirectly affects other things like digestion & how we show up day to day .
MY THEORY
In the words of Paul Blart, ” Fun fact for ya”.
I discovered something very interesting about fascia that I have yet to see someone really talk in depth about. That is fascia and its relation to God.
Another name for fascia is, Fabric of your life.
According to Tom Myers, Author of ” Anatomy Trains” he also describes fascia as being the biological fabric that holds us together, the connective tissue network .
So with that in mind, let me share my theory:
In psalms 139:13 NIV it reads
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb .”
Psalms 139:13 NIV
Disclaimer: I am still learning and discovering more about this, but for now i’m under the assumption that fascia is the “fabric” god uses to knit our being together. For some reason I also feel like it has something to do with binding our soul to our body. I don’t have time to go into detail in this post about this theory , but if you’re interested in that concept, stick around until I gather enough evidence to support my position .
All in all, Fascia is very interesting.
Why It’s Important
Addressing issues in the fascia can reduce pain ( physical & emotional) , increase range of motion, and help to nourish muscles and nerves. They can provide support for surrounding tissues, help reduce friction , and play a supportive role for the tissues and organs.
Because it is liquid, the fascia serves as a conduit for electrical currents (energy) and provides a network for cellular communication to the brain.
Overall your fascia reveals the status of your overall physical health and the state of your health your emotions are in. So, it is certainly something to be more mindful of.
